“I did it for us.”
That sentence gave me all the answers I needed.
I walked past them without saying another word.
No shouting.
No argument.
No scene.
I went straight to my car and sat behind the wheel.
For several seconds, I simply stared at my reflection.
Then I picked up my phone and called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“You have exactly five minutes.”
“What?”
“Bring Vanessa to my attorney’s office immediately.”
He gave a nervous laugh.
“Emily, don’t be dramatic.”
I cut him off.
“No. This is your last opportunity to make things right.”
Silence followed.
Daniel still did not understand.
He thought this was about jealousy.
He thought I only wanted an apology.
Most of all, he believed I would eventually calm down and come home like I always had.
He was wrong.
He hung up.
At that exact moment, another message appeared on my phone.
It was from my attorney.
“The emergency injunction has been approved. We’re ready whenever you are.”
I read it twice.
Then I looked toward Daniel’s office building.
Five minutes had almost passed.
And Daniel still had no idea what was about to change.
