For several minutes I cried openly, clutching the note against my chest.
Not because I felt helpless anymore.
But because even in her final days, while facing fears she never shared with me, Sarah had been thinking about protecting us instead of protecting herself.
She’d been carrying this burden completely alone.
A movement in the doorway made me quickly wipe my eyes.
Julie stood there quietly.
She looked from me to the scattered legal papers covering the kitchen table.
“Dad?”
I forced a smile.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
She stepped inside cautiously.
“Were you talking to Mom?”
The innocent question nearly broke me again.
“I wish I could.”
Julie glanced toward the papers.
“Are we in trouble?”
Children notice more than adults realize.
I folded the documents into a neat pile before answering.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
She walked over and wrapped her arms around my waist.
“You don’t have to pretend with us.”
I hugged her tightly.
“I’m not pretending.”
“Mom always said when something scary happened, we should face it together.”
I kissed the top of her head.
“She was right.”
Julie looked up at me.
“Then whatever this is…”
She squeezed my hand.
“…we’ll face it together.”
After she returned upstairs, I looked again at Sarah’s final note.
Trust Rebecca.
Rebecca.
The name sounded familiar.
Then I remembered.
About a year earlier Sarah had mentioned meeting an attorney through one of her coworkers.
At the time she’d simply said, “She’s helping me organize a few legal things.”
I never asked what she meant.
Now I understood why.
I searched through the envelope again until I found a business card.
Rebecca Lawson.
Family Law Attorney.
A handwritten note on the back read:
If necessary, call immediately.
No matter the hour.
I checked the clock.
7:18 p.m.
Was it too late?
I didn’t care.
I dialed the number.
She answered before the second ring.
“Rebecca Lawson.”
“My name is Daniel Carter.”
Silence.
Then her voice softened.
“Daniel.”
“You know who I am?”
“I’ve been expecting your call.”
Every hair on my arms stood up.
“You… have?”
“Sarah prepared me.”
Emotion caught in my throat.
“I found the documents.”
“I’m very glad you did.”
“I also spoke to Linda.”
Another brief silence.
“Did she ask for the insurance money?”
“Yes.”
“And did she threaten custody?”
“How did you know?”
“Because Sarah believed that’s exactly what her mother would do.”
I sank into the nearest chair.
“She knew everything.”
“She did.”
Rebecca’s voice remained calm and professional.
“But she also planned for everything.”
“Can you help me?”
“Yes.”
The certainty in that single word felt like someone throwing me a lifeline.
“What do I need to do?”
“I want you to invite Linda to your house tonight.”
I blinked.
“…Tonight?”
“Tell her you’ve made your decision.”
“And then?”
“I’ll be waiting.”
