After sixteen years together, I thought I knew exactly what our future held. I had the ring, the plan, and the woman I still loved as deeply as I had at 19. Then Samantha stopped my proposal with one sentence, and everything I believed about us began to shift.
The room went silent when my mother looked at Samantha and said, “Harry needs time to decide whether he’s willing to give up being a father.”
Samantha’s fingers tightened around her purse.
Relatives stood beneath gold balloons beside an untouched cake, waiting to see what I’d do.
My sister, Paige, moved closer to Samantha.
I opened my mouth.
“Harry needs time to decide.”
Nothing came out.
Three seconds.
That was all it took.
Samantha looked at me, and I watched 16 years of trust crack behind her eyes.
“She’s right,” she whispered. “You should think.”
She turned toward the door.
“You should think.”
“No.”
I stepped in front of her.
For one second, she thought I was stopping her.
Then I faced my mother.
“We’re leaving,” I said. “This is your house, but Samantha and I are done standing here while you discuss her life like it’s a family vote.”
“No.”
My mother blinked. “I’m trying to protect you.”
“From the woman I’ve loved for 16 years?”
“From giving up something you’ve always wanted.”
Samantha reached for her coat. I picked it up, then held it out to her.
“There isn’t an engagement to celebrate,” I said. “Not tonight. Samantha and I will decide what happens next, without an audience.”
“I’m trying to protect you.”
My mother didn’t move. “You’ve always talked about children.”
“I have. And Samantha has spent eight months believing that mattered more to me than she did.”
Samantha looked at me, but she didn’t take my hand.
