My husband had spent eight years desperately wishing for a son. But when he finally held our newborn boy and noticed a tiny mark on his back, his joy vanished. He looked at me and said, “That baby isn’t mine.” What we uncovered afterward exposed a family secret that had been buried for decades.

“He’s my husband.”

“No. Right now he’s the man who abandoned you immediately after childbirth because he trusted a suspicion more than his wife.”

Her words hurt because they were true.

That afternoon, I arranged a DNA test.

Daniela retrieved one of Ricardo’s toothbrushes from our house. I swabbed Mateo’s cheek while he slept, sealed everything, and sent the samples away.

The following week felt endless.

My body was still recovering. I barely slept. The girls asked about Ricardo constantly. Every time I changed Mateo, I saw that pale crescent-shaped mark and felt furious that something so innocent had been turned into evidence against me.

Four days later, Javier appeared at Daniela’s house carrying a teddy bear and sweet bread.

“Ricardo blocked me,” he said. “What happened? Is Mateo okay?”

I couldn’t look directly at him.

Javier appeared exhausted. During my pregnancy, he had been the person we called whenever something went wrong. He had carried water containers, driven Valentina to the dentist, and picked up medication when I could no longer manage long drives.

Ricardo had taken years of friendship and turned it into an accusation.

“We’re okay,” I said. “I just need some time.”

Javier hesitated.

“Mariana, if I did something that upset Ricardo—”

“It’s not you.”

I stopped.

“Or maybe somehow it is. I don’t know anymore.”

His face changed.

Daniela stepped behind me.

“You should leave for now, Javier. Someone will call you when the time is right.”

He placed the teddy bear on the floor and left.

A week after Mateo was born, the DNA result arrived.

I opened the document at Daniela’s kitchen table.

**Probability of paternity: 99.99%.**

Mateo was Ricardo’s biological son.

For about three seconds, I felt relief.

Then all I felt was rage.

I didn’t call Ricardo.

I didn’t send him a message.

I simply forwarded the result.

He arrived less than an hour later.

His beard had grown out, his shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were swollen. He stood outside Daniela’s house looking like a man who had suddenly realized he had thrown away something precious.

“Mariana, forgive me. I’m an idiot.”

“Yes.”
