I overheard my husband and his grandfather talking about a woman’s body. I thought I knew exactly who they meant—until I heard something that made my blood run cold.
“Come here a second,” Ryan said. “If you promise not to tell anyone, I’ve got a video I want to show you.”
I stopped in the hallway, still holding the wine bottle.
I heard his phone unlock.
His grandfather chuckled.
“You young people and your phones.”
“Just watch.”
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then a woman’s voice came from Ryan’s phone.
My voice.
I nearly dropped the bottle.
The sound was muffled, but there was no mistaking it.
I was humming.
That same stupid song I always hummed while getting ready for bed.
Grandpa said, “She doesn’t know you recorded this?”
Ryan laughed.
“No.”
Every hair on my arms rose.
“Where’d you put the camera?”
“Bedroom.”
My stomach twisted.
Then Ryan added, almost proudly,
“She thinks that smoke detector has always been there.”
Something inside me went completely still.
Grandpa laughed again.
“You’re going to get yourself killed if she ever finds out.”
“She won’t.”
