“Mommy… Daddy is right there.” My four-year-old daughter’s words stopped me beside the pool.
I followed Mia’s gaze toward Harold, my boss and my late husband’s closest friend, but I had no idea what she thought she was seeing.
A year earlier, I had lost my husband, Mike, to canc3r.
I was thirty-seven and suddenly raising our daughter alone.
Mia was only three when he died, and even now she still asked the same painful question almost every night.
“When is Daddy coming home?”
Harold had known Mike far longer than I had.
They had grown up together, traveled together, shared decades of jokes and memories.
After Mike’s death, Harold became the person who quietly kept my life from falling apart.
He brought groceries.
He replaced my washing machine when it broke.
He sat on the living-room floor building Lego castles with Mia while I slept on the couch from exhaustion.
I was grateful.
Maybe too grateful.
The morning before Harold’s company pool party, my friend and coworker Rachel pulled me aside.
“Alison, people are starting to notice how much time Harold spends with you.”
“He’s helping because Mike was his best friend.”
“I know. But he’s also your boss.”
I dismissed her concern.
That afternoon, Harold invited the entire office to his house and told me to bring Mia.
“She’ll have fun,” he said.
His backyard looked like something from a magazine.
String lights glowed over the patio.
People stood around the pool holding drinks while music played softly in the background.
I already felt out of place.
Then Mia spotted Harold.
She ran across the patio before I could stop her.
Harold laughed and lifted her easily into his arms.
For a moment, she relaxed against him the same way she once had against Mike.
Then suddenly, Mia became completely still.
Her eyes moved toward the side of Harold’s head.
Her little fingers reached toward his ear.
“Mommy…”
I looked at her.
“Daddy is there.”
Harold’s expression changed instantly.
He carefully put Mia down.
She pointed at him again.
“Daddy’s there! Look!”
People nearby turned toward us.
Embarrassed, I pulled Mia close.
“I’m sorry,” I told Harold. “She misses Mike. Sometimes she gets confused.”
“It’s fine,” he replied.
But he didn’t look fine.
He walked away almost immediately.
I tried telling myself it was only grief.
Mia had seen something that reminded her of Mike.
That was all.
Except Harold had reacted as though she had uncovered something he hoped no one would notice.
Later, I found him talking to his business partner, Benjamin.
I wasn’t trying to listen, but one sentence caught my attention.
“And you’re really rebuilding the entire second floor for a family?”
I stopped.
Harold wasn’t married.
He didn’t have children.
So what family was Benjamin talking about?
Then Harold turned slightly beneath the patio lights.
That was when I saw it.
A tiny compass tattoo behind his ear.
My heart nearly stopped.
Mike had the exact same tattoo.
In the exact same place.
