I was folding a basket of freshly dried laundry when my phone buzzed across the kitchen counter. The screen lit up with the name of Noah’s elementary school.
My heart skipped.
Schools rarely called parents in the middle of the day unless something was wrong.
I wiped my hands on a towel and answered immediately.
“Hello?”
The secretary’s voice sounded calm but serious.
“Mrs. Collins? There’s been an incident involving Noah.”
Every muscle in my body tightened.
“What kind of incident?”
“There was a physical altercation between Noah and another student. We’d like you to come to the school as soon as possible.”
For a moment, I simply stared out the kitchen window.
“A fight?” I repeated, convinced I had misunderstood.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“I… I’ll be there right away.”
The call ended, but I remained frozen, my phone still pressed against my ear.
A fight?
That couldn’t be right.
Not Noah.
My seven-year-old son apologized when he accidentally stepped on someone’s foot. He cried whenever he saw injured birds and insisted on carrying worms off the sidewalk after it rained so they wouldn’t dry out in the sun.
He wasn’t the kind of child who solved problems with his fists.
If anything, he usually let other children take his toys just to avoid arguments.
Something had to be wrong.
I grabbed my purse and keys without even bothering to finish folding the laundry.
The drive to the school felt endless.
Every red light seemed deliberately timed to keep me waiting.
Questions raced through my head faster than I could answer them.
Had another child bullied him?
Had someone hurt him?
Was he injured?
Or had there been some terrible misunderstanding?
By the time I pulled into the school parking lot, my hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles had turned white.
I hurried through the front entrance, barely noticing the familiar hallway decorations or the colorful student artwork lining the walls.
The secretary looked up the moment I arrived.
“The principal is expecting you,” she said gently. “His office is just ahead.”
“Is Noah okay?”
