Dad announced at family dinner, “Your brother and his fiancée are moving into the penthouse. Pack your things and leave, you parasite.”

I called the building manager from the gate before boarding.

Her name was Angela Ruiz, and she had managed the property since before I moved in.

“Your father submitted a resident-transfer form last Friday,” she said. “It says you authorized Tyler and Madison to replace you on the lease.”

“I authorized nothing.”

“I thought so. The signature didn’t match the one in your original file.”

My stomach dropped.

Angela forwarded the form.

My name was printed at the bottom.

But the signature wasn’t mine.

Dad had told the leasing office I was relocating for work and “gifting the remaining term” to Tyler.

Except Tyler would still have needed a new application, income verification, credit approval, and his own security deposit.

Dad had apparently promised him none of that would be necessary.

I called Tyler.

He answered by shouting.

“What did you do?”

“I ended my lease. Dad told me to leave.”

“You knew we were moving in today!”

“No. Dad announced it last night.”

Silence.

Then Madison’s voice came from the background.

“He told us you agreed two weeks ago.”

Tyler’s tone changed.

“Emily… Dad said the penthouse was your wedding gift to us.”

“He called me a parasite at dinner, Tyler.”

Dad grabbed the phone.

“You’re proving my point. You always make everything about yourself.”

“I paid the rent.”

“We’re family.”

“That sentence only seems to matter when you want something I paid for.”

He demanded that I call Angela and reactivate the access cards for “just a few days.”

I refused.

Then Angela joined the call.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “we need to discuss the transfer form.”

Dad went silent.

Tyler asked, “What form?”

Angela explained.

Madison whispered, “You said Emily signed it.”

Dad snapped, “She practically did. I used the signature from her renewal paperwork because I knew she’d eventually agree.”

Nobody spoke.

Strangely, I felt calm.

All my life, Dad had treated my boundaries as temporary inconveniences.

If I said no, he waited until guilt turned it into yes.

If I paid for something, he called it family property.

If Tyler needed something, I was expected to step aside.

But this time, Dad had made my name say yes without me.

Angela told him the building’s legal department would preserve the document and instructed him to stop presenting himself as an owner or tenant.

Then she sent me one final attachment.

The transfer paperwork had a second page.

Under “financial guarantor,” Dad had entered my name again.

Beside it was an authorization making me responsible for up to twelve months of unpaid rent.

If the transfer had succeeded, he hadn’t simply planned to hand Tyler my home.

He planned to leave me paying for it too.
