I welcomed my husband aboard my Madrid flight—then discovered him in First Class beside his mistress, wearing a $12,000 necklace purchased with my company card.

Part 1
I stood at the boarding door in JFK’s Terminal 4 wearing my navy uniform, my hair perfectly pinned back, and the calm professional smile I had learned to wear after ten years of international flying.

It was an overnight flight to Madrid.

As senior purser in First Class, my job was to make every premium passenger feel welcomed and important.

Even when my own world was falling apart.

That morning, my husband, Julian Mercer, had kissed my forehead and told me he was flying to Dallas for an important board meeting.

I believed him.

After all, he was not only my husband.

He was also the man with whom I had spent years building Mercer & Partners.

Then the final passenger manifest printed.

Julian Mercer.

Seat 2A.

I stared at the name.

For several seconds, I convinced myself it had to be a mistake.

Maybe another passenger had the same name.

Maybe the system was wrong.

Then Julian appeared at the end of the jet bridge.

And he was not alone.

A younger woman walked beside him wearing an elegant cashmere coat.

Julian’s hand rested comfortably against her back.

But it was not their body language that made my stomach tighten.

It was the necklace around her neck.

A rose-gold Cartier panther pendant.

I knew that necklace.

Three weeks earlier, I had personally approved the expense through our company’s corporate system.

My company.

The business Julian had helped me build—and apparently had begun treating like his personal wallet.

Then he saw me.

For one brief second, the confidence vanished from his face.

He knew immediately that his carefully constructed lie had collapsed.

I could have shouted.

I could have confronted him in front of everyone.

Instead, I straightened my uniform and smiled.

“Welcome aboard, Julian. I hope the Dallas trip is going well.”

His face went pale.

The woman beside him looked confused.

“You two know each other?”

I glanced at her necklace.

“You could say that.”

Then I added calmly:

“I helped him sign some of the most important contracts of his career.”

I paused.

“And I also oversee the company finances.”

Her smile weakened.

Still, she did not understand the full picture.

Not yet.

I stepped aside.

“Seats 2A and 2B. Please follow me.”

They walked past me together.

Julian thought the worst thing that could happen was that I had caught him.

He was wrong.

Because he had brought his secret onto an aircraft while using company money to fund it.

And I knew every contract, every account, and every safeguard connected to the business we had built.

At thirty thousand feet, anger would accomplish very little.

Patience would accomplish much more.

Julian believed he was flying toward another woman.

In reality, he was flying directly into the consequences of his own decisions.
