I welcomed my husband aboard my Madrid flight—then discovered him in First Class beside his mistress, wearing a $12,000 necklace purchased with my company card.

Once First Class was settled, I stepped into the forward galley.

One of my attendants quietly handed me the transaction report.

The tickets for seats 2A and 2B had cost roughly $14,000.

Both had been purchased with a Mercer & Partners corporate card.

A business account partly backed by assets I had personally guaranteed.

I stared at the report.

Then I opened the secure company portal and contacted our legal and financial team.

Julian believed he was traveling to Europe in connection with a major merger.

What he apparently forgot was that his authority depended on board approval and company rules—not simply his title.

I requested an immediate review of his corporate spending and temporary suspension of questionable transactions.

Then I sent the board documentation connected to the two tickets and the Cartier purchase.

I did not accuse him of anything beyond what the records showed.

I did not need to.

The receipts spoke for themselves.

A few minutes later, confirmation arrived.

His corporate spending privileges had been suspended pending review.

His executive authority over the European transaction was temporarily frozen.

Legal counsel had also begun protecting company assets until the board could determine exactly what had happened.

Then I did something far simpler.

I poured two glasses of champagne.

I carried them into First Class.

Julian was leaning toward the woman—Serena Hale—speaking quietly.

The moment he saw me, his shoulders tightened.

“Champagne for 2A and 2B?” I asked pleasantly.

Serena smiled.

“This flight is starting wonderfully.”

“I’m glad.”

Then I looked at Julian.

“Although there appears to be a small administrative problem with your booking.”

His jaw tightened.

“Clara. Please. Not here.”

“It’s purely business.”

I placed the tray down.

“The corporate card used for these tickets has been suspended while accounting reviews the charges.”

Serena frowned.

“Julian, you said the company covered this trip.”

“It does,” he said quickly. “There’s been some mistake.”

I continued calmly.

“The board is also reviewing your executive authority, including your involvement in the European merger.”

Serena looked between us.

“What is going on?”

Julian leaned toward me.

“Come into the galley. Now.”

My expression did not change.

“Please remain seated, Mr. Mercer.”

He froze.

“You are a passenger on this aircraft. If you disrupt the cabin, the captain will handle it like any other passenger issue.”

Julian slowly sat back down.

Serena stared at me.

Then realization crossed her face.

“Wait.”

She looked at Julian.

“You’re Clara Mercer?”

I nodded.

“His wife?”

“Yes.”

Serena immediately pulled her hand away from him.

Then she unclasped the Cartier necklace and placed it on the tray.

“He told me he was divorced.”

Her voice shook.

“He told me he owned the entire company.”

I looked at Julian.

That sounded exactly like him.

“A lot of Julian’s stories work,” I said quietly, “until someone checks the paperwork.”

Serena stared at him as though she were seeing him for the first time.

I picked up the necklace.

“Enjoy the flight.”

Then I returned to the galley.

Behind me, neither of them touched the champagne.
