I spent 18 years calling my wife a coward for abandoning our son. Then I unfolded the letter she had written before she disappeared, and I realized the story I had been telling myself was only half the truth.
Eighteen years ago, everything fell apart in a hospital room.
A doctor sat beside my wife’s bed and quietly told us that our newborn son, Leo, had Down syndrome.
I remember looking at him for the first time.
He was tiny, with dark hair, a round face, and fingers so small that his entire hand wrapped around the tip of mine.
He was perfect.
Then I looked at Goldi.
She barely looked at him.
She stared at the floor while the doctor explained that Leo might need heart examinations, hearing tests, early intervention, and extra medical support as he grew.
When the doctor left, Goldi whispered, “I can’t do this.”
I honestly thought she was in shock.
I pulled my chair closer to her bed.
“We don’t have to know how to do everything today,” I said. “We’ll figure it out together. One day at a time.”
She shook her head.
“No, Arthur. I can’t.”
“You’re frightened. So am I.”
She turned toward the window.
“You’re not listening to me. I can’t do this.”
For the rest of that afternoon, she refused to hold Leo.
I did Leo’s bottle feeding and changing while she barely acknowledged us.
I told myself she was having a hard time coming to terms with the diagnosis.
I was, too, but I had to step up as she had just been through labor and childbirth.
I hoped she would soon realize we were in this together and we would always support each other.
That night, I woke in the chair beside her bed and saw her standing over his bassinet.
Her back was toward me.
One hand hovered above his blanket as if she wanted to touch him but could not make herself do it.
I closed my eyes before she noticed I was awake.
The next morning, she was distant again.
“Could you raise him alone?” she asked.
I thought she meant if something happened to one of us someday.
“I wouldn’t have to,” I said. “He has both of us.”
She began crying.
I reached for her, but she turned away.
Two days later, Goldi told me she wanted a divorce.
I laughed because the idea seemed impossible.
We had been married for four years.
Three weeks earlier, she had been folding baby clothes and arguing with me about whether the nursery needed another lamp.
Now she would not even look me in the eye.
She would not even touch our baby.
“You don’t mean that,” I said.
“I do.”
