While I was in the hospital, my parents and sister told my 6-year-old adopted daughter she was going back to the orphanage. “You need to make space for the real children,”

He claimed he was there to “check on his daughter and granddaughter.”

Mr. Alvarez called me upstairs.

“Do you want me to let him in?”

“No.”

There was a pause.

“Do you want me to call the police?”

“Only if he refuses to leave.”

Dad left before officers were needed, but not before sending me a message.

You have completely lost perspective.

I didn’t reply.

Instead, I made pancakes for lunch because that was what Lily wanted.

She ate two bites, then asked whether Grandpa was angry because of her.

“No,” I said. “Grandpa is angry because I made a decision he doesn’t like.”

“About me?”

“About who gets to come into our home and how people are allowed to speak to us.”

She thought about it.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

That was when I understood how much damage had already been done.

My family had turned her place in my life into something she believed could be earned or lost through good behavior.

I called her therapist, Dr. Evelyn Shaw, and explained everything.

Evelyn moved Lily’s appointment to the next afternoon.

Then I started dealing with the practical fallout.

I removed Mom as secondary beneficiary from an old life-insurance policy.

Changed the executor of my will from Dad to Melissa.

Canceled the automatic payment I’d been making toward my parents’ supplemental health-insurance premium and sent them the account details so they could take over.

I also told Vanessa’s landlord I would no longer guarantee her new commercial lease.

That was when Vanessa came to my door.

She arrived alone at 6:15 p.m.

I watched through the camera.

“Open the door,” she said.

“No.”
