While I was in the hospital, my parents and sister told my 6-year-old adopted daughter she was going back to the orphanage. “You need to make space for the real children,”

I didn’t tell him everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

Trust returned slowly.

Supervised lunches became short visits at my apartment.

Short visits eventually became afternoons at the science museum.

Vanessa remained outside that circle.

That was her choice.

Two years later, on Lily’s eighth birthday, we had cake in the same apartment where she’d once asked whether I would send her away.

Rachel was there.

Mom was there.

Dad was there.

Even Daniel stopped by with a ridiculous chemistry set that Lily immediately loved.

Vanessa wasn’t invited.

After everyone left, Lily sat on the kitchen counter eating frosting from a paper plate.

She had grown taller.

The stuffed fox mostly stayed on her bed now instead of traveling everywhere.

“Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you remember when Aunt Vanessa said I wasn’t real?”

I set down the dish I was washing.

“Yes.”

“She was wrong.”

It wasn’t a question.

“No,” I said. “She was wrong.”

Lily nodded, satisfied.

Then she pointed her fork toward the leftover cake.

“Can I have another piece?”

“You already had two.”

“So?”

I laughed.

“So you can have half a piece.”

She groaned as though I’d committed an unforgivable injustice.

And that, more than any legal letter, canceled loan, family meeting, or signed boundary, was how I knew we’d reached the other side.

She wasn’t asking whether she could stay.

She was arguing about cake.

Like any child who knew she was home.
