The doctor nodded.
“She was carrying an epinephrine injector.”
I blinked.
“She always keeps one in her bag.”
“Liam found it.”
Then he added,
“He also remembered something from the safety briefing.”
My eyes widened.
“Blue Cove Clinic.”
The doctor smiled.
“Most people forget we exist. He didn’t. He knew bringing her here was much faster than returning to the resort.”
I looked at the frozen image of Liam carrying Maya.
“He saved her.”
The doctor nodded.
“He made exactly the right decision.”
He hesitated.
“Another five minutes…”
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t need to.
Tears blurred my vision.
Minutes later, we reached the clinic.
Maya was sitting upright in a hospital bed, exhausted but smiling weakly.
The moment she saw us, she started crying.
“I’m sorry.”
I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around her.
“You don’t ever have to apologize for this.”
She held onto me.
“I got scared.”
“I know.”
Daniel kissed her head.
“We’re just glad you’re here.”
Across the room, Liam stood beside the window.
His clothes were still wet.
His hands were trembling.
I walked toward him.
He searched my face.
I searched his.
Then I hugged him.
As tightly as I’d hugged Maya.
“I’m sorry.”
He looked confused.
“For what?”
“For one minute…” I swallowed. “I thought you were taking her away from us.”
He shook his head.
“I would’ve thought the same thing.”
I laughed through my tears.
“Thank you. You saved my little girl.”
He smiled awkwardly.
