One of My Twin Daughters Passed Away—Three Years Later, Her Sister’s Teacher Said, “Both Your Girls Are Doing Great”

I covered my mouth.

Lily walked closer.

“What’s your name?”

The girl hesitated.

“Grace.”

Lily shook her head slowly.

“No,” she said. “Your name is Ava.”

The principal immediately called Grace’s guardian.

Twenty minutes later, a woman hurried into the office. She looked to be in her late thirties, with tired eyes and a worried expression.

“My name is Rachel Carson,” she said, placing a protective arm around Grace. “What is happening?”

I did not know how to explain it without sounding irrational.

I showed Rachel a photograph on my phone.

It had been taken a week before Ava became ill. The twins were sitting together on our front porch, dressed in matching sweaters.

Rachel stared at the picture.

The color drained from her face.

“Where did you get this?”

“They’re my daughters,” I said. “Lily and Ava.”

She looked at Grace.

Then she looked back at the photograph.

“That can’t be.”

Rachel explained that she had first met Grace nearly three years earlier.

Grace had been recovering at a children’s rehabilitation facility after a severe illness. She had experienced memory loss, speech difficulties, and periods of confusion.

No relatives had been found.

According to the records Rachel received, the child had arrived from another hospital with incomplete identification. A name appeared briefly in her paperwork, but authorities later determined it belonged to another patient.

Rachel had been a foster parent at the time.

She took the frightened little girl into her home, believing the placement would last only a few weeks.

Weeks became months.

No family came forward.

Eventually, Rachel adopted her and gave her the name Grace.

“I didn’t take anyone’s child,” Rachel said, tears filling her eyes. “I followed every rule. They told me they had searched everywhere.”

“I believe you,” I said.

And I did.
