“I need to hear him say it,” she told me.
“You may hear less than you deserve.”
Inside, furniture had been pushed against the walls.
White paint samples marked my blue hallway.
Boxes Jason had filled and labeled “DONATE” sat near the stairs.
My books were inside one.
Daniel’s old records were inside another.
Jason stood in the living room beside a woman holding a tablet.
“Mom?” he said.
The agent frowned.
“You said the owner had relocated.”
“I did,” I said, holding up my key. “For three nights.”
Emily entered behind me.
The agent looked between Jason and me.
“Are you authorizing the sale?” she asked.
“No.”
Jason stepped forward.
“She agreed. She is emotional because Emily overreacted.”
Emily gave him a cold stare.
“Do not make it out like I influenced her decision.”
The agent closed her tablet.
“You told me you had the authority to act for the owner. You do not. I will not be representing this property.”
Jason gestured toward the room.
“We already scheduled photographs.”
“Then cancel them,” I said.
Mrs. Alvarez pointed at the boxes.
“And move those. Half the street watched you carry them in.”
Jason looked around.
