I asked, “What did my brother-in-law find?”
Tom laughed quietly.
“Enough to be inconvenient.”
“Kids were moved for money?”
He didn’t answer directly.
He didn’t have to.
“Your brother-in-law should have kept his mouth shut,” he said. “Alice should have done the same.”
Alice stepped forward.
“You stole years from my children.”
Tom shook his head.
“No. You handed them over when you stayed gone.”
The words hit like a slap.
Then—
The sound of tires on wet gravel echoed above us.
Tom heard it too.
His eyes sharpened.
Alice said, “Rachel called them.”
His expression changed instantly.
Daniel shouted, “Now!”
Everything happened at once.
I grabbed Tom’s wrist.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Dirt and wood rained down.
Daniel kicked his leg.
Alice swung the shovel into his shoulder.
Tom stumbled backward.
The rotten boards beneath him collapsed.
He fell into the lower pit.
The metal lockbox became visible beside him.
By the time the state police arrived, Tom was trapped under debris, still cursing.
Daniel stood there, hands shaking, holding up his phone.
The recording captured everything.
Threats.
Admissions.
Enough.
The lockbox confirmed the rest.
Wrapped in oilcloth. Sealed in contractor bags.
Inside—ledgers, letters, bank records, placement files.
Names. Dates.
Proof.
My brother-in-law had known exactly how dangerous this was.
Alice came home two days later.
Not like a miracle.
Like damage returning to where it began.
Ben hugged her, and she broke down crying.
Rachel looked at her and said, “You missed everything.”
Mia asked, “Did you still love us?”
Alice answered, “Every day.”
Daniel never left her side.
