“I thought you said it was yours.”
“I lied.”
Margaret unlocked the box.
Inside were dozens of letters.
Most were written to Harold.
One was addressed to Dad.
One to Vanessa.
And one to me.
My hands shook as Margaret handed it over.
Across the envelope were the words:
For Natalie, when Richard finally tells the truth.
I opened the letter.
The first sentence knocked the air out of my lungs.
Natalie, if you’re reading this, Richard has probably told you that Harold is Vanessa’s father.
I looked up at Dad.
He nodded silently.
I kept reading.
That part is true.
Then came the next line.
What Richard does not know is that Harold is also your father.
I stopped breathing.
Dad whispered,
“No.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Vanessa stared at me.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Mom explained everything.
Her affair with Harold hadn’t lasted a few months.
It had continued for nearly fifteen years.
Vanessa was Harold’s daughter.
So was I.
Dad had never known.
He believed the affair ended before I was born.
Harold knew.
Mom knew.
And apparently Harold had been preparing to reveal the truth.
Dad staggered backward.
“You’re not mine?”
I couldn’t answer.
The devastation on his face broke something inside me.
Then Vanessa started crying.
Not softly.
