At the next family dinner, Rachel glanced toward the closet.
“That was the most annoying lesson anyone has ever taught me.”
Aunt Linda smiled.
“Did it work?”
Rachel served Mom another spoonful of potatoes, then paused.
“Do you want more?” she asked.
Mom considered the question and nodded.
“Yes,” she said. “It worked.”
Rachel passed her the bowl.
Nobody applauded.
Nobody needed to.
For once, she had asked.
