“She said you painted that ugly green door just to irritate everyone.”
For a second, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
His sister was facing serious charges, yet apparently Linda had still spent time complaining about my door.
“I’m sorry for what your family is going through,” I finally said.
He stared at me, nodded once, and walked away.
The trial eventually ended with a conviction.
I won’t describe every detail of what investigators uncovered.
Some things belong to Carol’s family more than they belong in my story.
But after nearly two years of uncertainty, they finally received answers.
Not peace.
I don’t think losing someone that way ever ends in peace.
But they knew what had happened.
Outside the courthouse one day, Carol’s sister approached me.
“You’re the woman with the doorbell camera.”
“Yes.”
“I wanted to thank you.”
I immediately felt uncomfortable.
“I didn’t really do anything.”
“You called the police,” she said. “You saved the footage. If you hadn’t done that, we might still be wondering where Carol went.”
I didn’t know what to say.
“I’m sorry for what your family went through.”
She nodded.
“At least now we know.”
That conversation changed the way I thought about everything.
It would be easy to tell this story as though Linda simply received karma for harassing me over a paint color.
But that would make the story far too small.
This wasn’t really about my front door.
It was about Carol.
A woman I had never met whose family spent almost a year wondering whether she would ever come home.
My dispute with Linda simply became the accidental thread that pulled something much darker into the light.
And the number of small coincidences involved still unsettles me.
What if I had painted my door another color?
What if Linda had accepted the HOA’s decision?
What if she hadn’t vandalized my porch?
What if I hadn’t installed a camera?
What if I had decided calling the police over paint was too dramatic?
Any one of those choices could have changed everything.
Eighteen months after the case began, I eventually sold my house.
Not because my mother had begged me to leave immediately.
And not because I wanted Linda to control another decision in my life.
I simply realized I didn’t want to spend the next decade looking out my kitchen window at the empty house where so much had happened.
I moved across town.
The neighborhood doesn’t have an HOA.
I checked carefully before buying.
And the first thing I did after moving in?
I painted my new front door the exact same shade of dark green.
