“Good morning,” a man answered.
“My name is on your voicemail from a while back,” I said. “I never called because I kept hoping I wouldn’t need to. I need to now.”
“Tell me what happened,” he said.
“My neighbor filled my swimming pool with concrete this morning,” I said. “She used her husband’s construction company truck to do it. I have all of it on video. The truck, the plates, the logo, her admitting she did it on purpose.”
There was a pause.
“Do not touch anything,” he said. “Do not let them leave without you seeing which way that truck goes. I’ll bring people with me today.”
I ended the call and set the phone down.
Later that day, a man in a dark suit knocked on Katherine’s door.
Two others waited near his car, one carrying surveying equipment, the other a clipboard.
“Who are they?” Katherine demanded, marching across the lawn toward me.
“The real-estate attorney I hired,” I answered. “I believe he brought a land surveyor and an insurance adjuster with him.”
She stopped.
“You crossed my property line,” I continued quietly. “You destroyed private property. Your husband used company equipment with no permit and no permission.”
The surveyor placed a marker near the fence.
“The line is here,” he called. “The truck was well inside her yard.”
The insurance adjuster kept writing.
“This qualifies as unauthorized use of insured commercial assets,” he said. “The company is liable.”
Katherine’s face went pale.
“You can’t do this to me!”
“I already sent the video to the local news,” I told her. “You and your husband’s construction company is about to become a headline.
Katherine stormed back toward me, shaking.
“No! ANYTHING BUT THIS! How could you possibly do something like this to me?!”
“I only hired someone to do exactly what you taught me,” I said, my voice steady for the first time in two years. “People like you only understand consequences.”
The news aired the footage that night.
Within days, her husband’s company was locally famous for all the wrong reasons.
A civil court later ordered Katherine to pay every cent needed to restore the pool.
Within weeks, moving trucks appeared outside her house.
She never said goodbye.
