“She is stable for the moment, but there are serious concerns about her treatment and living arrangements.”
“What concerns?”
The doctor hesitated.
“It would be best to discuss them in person.”
I dropped the shirt I was holding, grabbed my keys, and ran.

The Note Near the Elevators
I barely remembered the drive.
One moment I was pulling out of our neighborhood, and the next I was racing into the hospital parking lot with my coat sliding from one shoulder.
Inside, I rushed past the reception desk toward the elevators.
Before I could press the button, a gray-haired nurse stepped in front of me.
“Are you Patricia’s daughter-in-law?”
“Yes.”
She glanced toward the front desk, then pressed a folded piece of paper into my hand.
“I asked Dr. Hensley to call you,” she said quietly. “Read this now. Do not call your husband, and don’t tell anyone I approached you.”
My fingers trembled as I opened the note.
It contained only three lines:
Come to Room 120.
I have evidence you need to see.
Your husband has been lying to you.
My knees weakened.
The nurse caught my elbow.
“Can you walk?”
I nodded, although I was no longer sure.
She led me through a side corridor and unlocked a small administrative office.
A computer monitor sat on the desk.
Before turning it on, she faced me.
“My name is Evelyn,” she said. “Your mother-in-law has been trying to contact you for weeks.”
“I never received a call.”
“She tried four times from the ward phone. The number was blocked on your home line afterward.”
My stomach tightened.
“Michael blocked it?”
“We believe so. Patricia also wrote you a letter. She gave it to her son because she was unable to mail it herself.”
“I never received that either.”
“I know.”
Evelyn sat beside the computer.
“There is something else you need to see.”
The Woman in the Hallway
The security footage showed a hospital corridor.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then Michael stepped into view.
He was not walking toward his mother’s room.
A young woman was beside him.
Their fingers were intertwined.
