On Sunday afternoon, I placed the screenshot, the feeding records, and the bank statement on the kitchen table.
Then I carried Brandon’s overnight bag downstairs and placed it near the staircase.
Dawn sat with Ivy.
Summer held Lila.
When the lock turned, Brandon entered with a smile, his fishing gear hanging over one shoulder.
Then he saw us.
He froze.
“What is going on?”
“Close the door,” I said.
His smile vanished.
“You embarrassed me online.”
“I answered a question honestly.”
“You made everyone think I abandoned you.”
I held his gaze.
“I didn’t create that impression. I simply stopped hiding what you did.”
“It was only four days.”
“No, Brandon. This has been happening for six months. The trip just made it impossible for me to keep pretending.”
I pointed to the bank statement.
“You also took two thousand dollars from our emergency savings after telling me we could not afford childcare for one afternoon.”
He looked toward his mother.
“You’re taking her side?”
Dawn calmly adjusted Ivy’s blanket.
“Amy does not need me to speak for her.”
Brandon turned back to me.
“Fine. I’m sorry.”
I waited.
He stared at me as though those two words should erase everything.
“I heard you,” I said.
“What else do you expect?”
“Change.”
I slid the notebook across the table.
“Counseling. A real parenting schedule. Repayment of the money. Complete honesty about our finances. And no more pretending that you are an involved father while I do nearly everything.”
He stared at the list.
“This is humiliating.”
“No. This is accountability.”
His eyes moved toward the bag by the stairs.
“Are you kicking me out of my own house?”
“You can stay with your mother while we begin counseling.”
Dawn did not argue.
“You need time to decide whether being a father is just something you call yourself or something you are willing to practice every day.”
Brandon stared at me.
For years, I had softened every sentence to protect his pride.
I had accepted every excuse.
I had hidden the truth from our families.
That woman was gone.
Dawn stood and reached for his bag, but I stopped her.
“I’ll take it.”
I lifted the duffel bag and carried it to Brandon.
Then I placed the strap in his hand.
“You packed this bag because you believed you could walk away whenever our family became inconvenient.”
His fingers closed around the strap.
“Now carry it while you decide whether you are willing to return as a different husband and a real father.”
For once, Brandon had no answer.
He turned and walked out.
