At seven o’clock that evening, Daniel arrived at the house.

He wasn’t alone.

Even though he had been instructed to come by himself for a supervised pickup, Patricia was with him.

They had also rented a moving truck.

Patricia stepped out carrying several empty storage bins as if she were arriving to collect an inheritance.

The room went silent.

That was exactly what Detective Ruiz had been waiting for.
He stepped into the kitchen.

Ruiz produced information from the lender.

Then he asked Daniel one question.

“If this was only a draft, why was the receiving bank account yours?”

Before Daniel could answer, Patricia interrupted.

“It was my idea!”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom—”
