“About what?”
“Come sit down.”
I followed him into the dining room, still moving carefully because my chest was sore.
He pulled out a chair.
I thanked him automatically before sitting.
Then he took the chair across from me.
He folded his arms.
He wasn’t smiling.
After several uncomfortable seconds, I broke the silence.
“You’re making me nervous.”
He pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and slid it across the table.
A cosmetic surgery clinic was open on the screen.
Hair restoration.
Jaw contouring.
Liposuction.
Dental veneers.
I frowned.
“What am I looking at?”
He leaned back.
“I’ve been thinking.”
“About cosmetic surgery?”
“About fairness.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“You spent $5,000 from our family savings.”
I blinked.
“We agreed on that.”
“We did.”
“So?”
“I think it’s only fair that I get something too.”
I laughed because I assumed he was joking.
“You scared me for a second.”
“I’m serious.”
