I opened the pouch and placed the earrings in her palm.
“You said you’d never take them off,” I said. “Do you remember?”
Hannah nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Then she put them back in.
Right where they belonged.
I filed for divorce the following week.
The law could deal with Rick.
My energy belonged to Hannah now.
We started small.
Sunday breakfasts.
Long walks.
Piano lessons picked up again, almost as if the missing years hadn’t stolen so much from us.
