I pointed at the rectangle.
“And that’s my trash can?”
Both girls giggled.
After they left, I stood in my driveway looking at that ordinary plastic bin.
I had assumed the twins climbed inside because they were frightened children desperate for somewhere to hide.
The truth was far more deliberate.
Their mother, trapped only yards away, had spent days studying my routine and planning the one chance her daughters might have to reach someone outside.
The girls hadn’t hidden in my trash can because it happened to be nearby.
They had been sent there to find me.
But here is the real question: When a frightened child trusts you with something they are too scared to explain, do you look away to avoid getting involved, or do you risk stepping into the unknown because staying silent could cost someone their only chance at safety?
