The following months passed quickly.
The hotel flourished under its existing leadership team, and I discovered that I loved the work.
The Bennett Grand was not simply a valuable building.
It represented hundreds of employees, thousands of guests, and generations of memories.
Grandma recovered.
Ethan accepted a plea agreement that would keep him imprisoned for years.
Richard Vale remained missing.
Then, on the night of the hotel’s centennial gala, a sealed envelope arrived without a return address.
Inside was a photograph of my father standing beside Richard Vale.
Six words were written on the back:
ASK ELEANOR WHO WAS ON THE PLANE.
I found Grandma alone in the penthouse suite, watching fireworks explode over the lake.
I placed the photograph in front of her.
She did not ask where I had found it.
“Who was on the plane?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“No Bennett was on that plane,” she whispered.
“That’s impossible. My father died in the crash.”
“No. Your father was supposed to die in the crash.”
Grandma opened a concealed safe and removed a faded file.
Inside were photographs of a man named Marcus Doyle, one of Richard’s enforcers.
“Your father discovered that Richard had sabotaged the plane,” Grandma explained. “Marcus was sent aboard to make certain Jonathan took the flight. But the explosive device activated early. Marcus died with the pilot.”
My pulse thundered.
“Then whose body was identified as my father?”
“Marcus was carrying Jonathan’s passport, watch, and briefcase. Richard manipulated the remaining evidence. He wanted the world to believe Jonathan Bennett was dead.”
My knees weakened.
“Then my father is alive?”
A voice behind me answered.
“Yes.”
