From Age 65: How Often Should You Shower — and Why Over-Washing Can Harm Your Health

articleUseronAugust 17, 2026

Expert Recommendations

Many experts agree that, after age 65, daily full-body showers may not be necessary — or even beneficial.

Instead, the following habits are often recommended:

1. Shower Less Frequently

Limit full-body showers to every other day or about three times per week.

For daily hygiene, focus on washing essential areas such as the hands, face, underarms, and groin without over-drying the entire body.

2. Use Lukewarm Water

Avoid very hot water, which removes moisture and irritates sensitive skin.

Lukewarm water helps preserve the skin’s natural oils.

3. Choose Gentle Cleansers

Use fragrance-free, moisturizing soaps or cleansers designed for mature or sensitive skin.

Harsh products can worsen dryness and irritation.

4. Moisturize Immediately After Showering

Apply a rich moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp to help lock in hydration.

Look for products containing ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or shea butter.

5. Clean Only Where Necessary

If certain areas become sweaty or oily, spot-clean those areas instead of washing the entire body unnecessarily.
