For Years, My Husband Thought My Poor Eyesight Kept His Secret Safe – Then I Came Home from Laser Eye Surgery, Looked Inside the Garage, and Screamed, ‘This Can’t Be Real!’
His arm was around a dark-haired woman as they smiled on a beach, at a restaurant, and in front of a Christmas tree I had never seen.
My hands shook.
“This can’t be real!” I screamed.
A stack of mail rested on a small table.
I picked up the first envelope.
It was addressed to a woman named Penelope.
I assumed she was the woman smiling beside my husband in the photographs.
I struggled with my phone and called Marissa.
“Gina? What’s wrong?”
She returned within twenty minutes.
I heard her heels crossing the driveway before she pushed through the open garage door and froze.
“Oh my God,” she breathed. “Gina, what is this?!”
“It’s what Brian’s been doing,” I said. “For Lord knows how long.”
“We need to look around for anything that makes this whole thing make sense,” she suggested.
So we searched.
Marissa discovered a folder of documents inside a drawer. It contained contracts and permits showing that Brian had converted the garage into a livable space six years earlier.
Six years.
But invoices for furniture, utility connections for a second resident, and address-change documents were all dated within the previous four months. Before that, a framed certificate on the wall identified the space as “B. Whitfield – Private Office.”
He had created the room long before moving her into it.
I found another set of car keys near the side door.
There was also a woman’s toothbrush in the small bathroom.
Then Marissa handed me a note.
“You should read this.”
The handwriting curled across the page.
It was written to Brian.
“I know this is hard, love, with your estranged wife dying. But once she’s finally moved into the care facility, we can stop hiding. I hate staying out of sight like this, but you’re right – the less she senses, the smoother it’ll be. I’ll be back from Portland Sunday night. Mom’s surgery is Thursday, so don’t call before then. Just a few more months. Penelope.”
