At My Daughter’s Third Birthday Pool Party, She Pointed at My Stepmom’s Belly and Said, ‘Daddy’s in There’ – I Laughed Until I Saw What She Was Really Pointing At

“I stayed too far away.”

It was not an excuse.

It was an admission.

“I convinced myself distance was respectful,” Clara added. “Then the years passed, and every attempt felt more awkward than the last.”

I remembered Christmas mornings.

Clara always wrapped my presents in brown paper because Mom had done the same.

She baked cinnamon rolls using Mom’s recipe but never accepted credit.

She kept my childhood artwork framed in the hallway.

At graduations, she stood at the edge of every photograph.

I had interpreted each backward step as rejection.

Perhaps some of it had actually been fear.

Perhaps some of it had belonged to me as well.

Ariel climbed onto Clara’s lap without asking permission.

Clara stiffened, then carefully wrapped one arm around her.

“Does the lighthouse still work?” Ariel asked.

Clara blinked.

“No. I mean the hope.”

Clara looked at me.

The question cracked something open between us.

“Yes,” she said. “I think it does.”

The party resumed, although it no longer felt the same.
Glen returned to the grill.

My father brought Clara a clean towel.

Ariel spent the rest of the afternoon drawing smiling suns on everyone’s paper cups.

Near sunset, after the final guest had gone, I found Clara beside the quiet pool with her feet dangling in the water.

I sat next to her.

For a while, we watched forgotten balloons sway against the fence.

Then I touched the faded lighthouse.

“I thought this tattoo was hiding something that would break our family,” I whispered.

Clara wiped beneath one eye.

“It was hiding the reason you survived long enough to become part of it,” I finished.

She placed her hand over mine.

“I’m sorry I made you feel unwanted.”

“I’m sorry I never asked whether you were scared too, Clara.”

Across the patio, Ariel drew with sidewalk chalk.

A crooked lighthouse rose from pink waves.

Inside it stood three smiling people.

I called over to her.
