I stared until the numbers blurred.
“That’s impossible.”
Eric lowered his voice. “This card is attached to a private trust account. You are listed as the sole beneficiary.”
My knees weakened.
Then another line appeared beneath the balance.
Someone had attempted to withdraw $750,000 two days earlier.
The transaction had been denied.
Eric opened the details.
The applicant was Daniel Bennett.
My ex-husband.
Beside his name was something worse: a scanned power-of-attorney document carrying what looked like my signature.
A signature I had never made.
I stopped crying.
For the first time that day, fear gave way to something colder.
Clarity.
Eric immediately called the branch manager and asked that the account be blocked from further transfers.
As he spoke, I stared at Daniel’s name and finally understood why he had been so eager to force me out before Christmas.
