Part 1: The Homecoming He Never Expected
The moment my husband stepped through the front door, the cheerful expression on his face disappeared.
Brandon stood completely still, one hand wrapped around the strap of his fishing bag.
His eyes moved around the living room.
His mother, Dawn, was sitting on the couch with our daughter Ivy asleep against her chest.
My sister, Summer, was feeding Ivy’s twin sister, Lila.
Beside the staircase sat Brandon’s overnight bag—the one he had packed four days earlier before leaving me alone with our six-month-old twins.
Only this time, the bag was waiting for him.
On the kitchen table, I had carefully arranged three things.
A printed screenshot of the smiling vacation photo he had posted online.
Four days’ worth of feeding, diaper, and sleeping records.
And a copy of our bank statement showing exactly how much his “much-needed break” had cost our family.
Brandon looked at his mother.
“Mom? What are you doing here?”
Dawn said nothing.
She simply adjusted Ivy’s blanket and looked toward me.
For the first time since our daughters were born, no one was going to rescue Brandon from the truth.
I pulled out the chair across from mine.
“Close the door and sit down.”
His forehead tightened.
“Amy, what is all this?”
I folded my hands on the table.
“This is the first honest conversation we’ve had in six months.”
Four days earlier, I never would have imagined myself speaking so calmly.
Four days earlier, I had been standing in that same kitchen, holding one screaming baby while the other cried so hard that her tiny face had turned red.
And Brandon had walked in complaining that our home wasn’t peaceful enough for him.
