When it comes to home safety, small habits can make a big difference. One of the easiest habits to start is unplugging certain kitchen appliances at night, especially countertop devices that heat up quickly, draw power on standby, or sit near items that could catch fire.
Most modern appliances are designed with safety features, but no device is completely risk-free. A damaged cord, worn outlet, power surge, faulty switch, or aging internal component can turn a common kitchen gadget into a possible hazard. That is why many fire-safety experts recommend unplugging small appliances when they are not in use.
Here are five kitchen appliances worth unplugging before bed.
1. Air Fryers
Air fryers are convenient, powerful, and popular, but they also use high heat in a compact space. Even after cooking, the appliance can stay warm for a while. If the cord, plug, outlet, or internal wiring is damaged, leaving it plugged in may add unnecessary risk.
Unplug your air fryer after each use, let it cool completely, and keep it away from towels, paper, curtains, plastic bags, or anything else that can burn.

2. Toaster Ovens
Toaster ovens are another appliance that should not be ignored. They contain heating elements and often sit on crowded countertops. Crumbs, grease, and food particles can build up inside, increasing fire risk if the appliance overheats or malfunctions.
Before going to bed, unplug your toaster oven and make sure the inside is clean. Never store items on top of it, even when it is off.
3. Electric Kettles
Electric kettles usually shut off automatically, but that safety feature can fail over time. A damaged thermostat, loose connection, or dry heating element may create a problem if the kettle remains plugged in overnight.
After boiling water, unplug the kettle and empty any leftover water if you will not use it again soon. Also check the base regularly for moisture, cracks, or scorch marks.
4. Coffee Makers
Traditional coffee makers can be easy to forget, especially models with warming plates. If the plate stays hot too long, or if old wiring begins to fail, the appliance may become unsafe. Coffee residue, paper filters, and nearby clutter can make the risk worse.
Unplug your coffee maker after the morning brew. At night, double-check that it is off, cool, clean, and away from anything flammable.

5. Older Microwaves
