Why Is It Extremely Important Not to Flush the Toilet After Every Urination?

articleUseronApril 18, 2026

Flushing the toilet after using the toilet is something our parents taught us from childhood: after we’ve taken care of our hygiene needs, we had to pull the chain.

From that point on, the toileting routine is practically the same everywhere: you pee and quickly flush the toilet.

Flush the toilet after urinating
Of course, since it’s such a simple procedure, we don’t think there could be a mistake or that we’d do something wrong, but the truth is, despite its simplicity, we can all make mistakes.

At that point, we ask ourselves: are we really doing it right?

What happens to germs?
We all know that when we pull the chain, the cistern ensures that the toilet water flows into the bowl.

However, this simple action can spread germs throughout the bathroom.

So, if we don’t want our bathroom to become an amusement park for unwanted germs, we can minimize their spread by flushing the toilet only after closing the lid.

Water Savings
For those unfamiliar, flushing a toilet requires between 3 and 10 liters of water. This largely depends on the tank installed in our bathroom. Nevertheless, if we waste between 3 and 10 liters of water every time we urinate, and remember that this is drinking water, by the end of the day we’ll have wasted around 80 liters of water. This is an individual calculation, so imagine the costs this would entail for a family of four who use the toilet several times a day! Wasting water in this way is harmful not only to us but also to the entire ecosystem. For this reason, flushing the toilet less often, or at least limiting it, is a great way to reduce water waste, especially when it’s not necessary.

My husband burned the only beautiful dress I had so I wouldn’t be able to attend his promotion gala. Then he looked at me with contempt and called me “an embarrassment.”
